There is no turning back, it is time to look forward. We talked to Robert Burnell, Vice President at Precursive, about how to understand and move forward into this new phenomenon. 

What exactly is an agile workforce?

An agile workforce is a flexible and scalable approach to managing capacity, integrating a blend of technology and people. 

“Capacity is the employee or organisational ability to perform, yield or withstand within a workplace environment, particularly with regards to output. 84.2% of participants referred to capacity as when all their resources were deployed, the resources being their human capital; the level of this deployment varied.” 

Using the right tools, adapting to an agile workforce can enable companies to grow putting their most valuable assets first – their people.

How does capacity affect your workforce?

Simply put, if you don’t resource plan effectively you’ll have pockets of people who are burning out. Here the workforce can become reliant on short-term, reactive solutions rather than being strategic and forward-thinking, resulting in a stretched workforce and increased employee turnover. True agile planning requires improved forecasting during the inevitable peaks and troughs.

How does capacity affect your company?

“Capacity is a juggling act; if we are being technical, 100% capacity means no new business can be accepted. Sub-100% means potential billable time is lost, regardless of whether that time is filled with valuable activities.” The central responsibility of any organisation is to best leverage their most valuable asset – their people – by appropriately and effectively deploying resources.

In a recent survey by Precursive, 58% of C-level participants still use Excel to mitigate capacity issues but admit it is inadequate.
